I grew up in a Christian family being taught and seeing modeled passionate love for and faith in God. I remember as a young child being mesmerized as the “Missionary of the Week” spoke at a summer church camp. I can clearly recall my heart racing as I thought, “I hope I get to do that someday!” This little spark in my child heart grew as I became an adult.

Nick and I met and married during our years at Bible College. We became fully convinced of God’s love for the whole world and our part in being obedient to share that love. Jesus told his disciples in the Bible that it doesn’t take a huge amount of faith to obey God and see Him do great things. Faith as small as a mustard seed in our great God is enough that “nothing is impossible!” We are believing that now as we are living with our two little ones, Coco, age 4, and Owen, age 2, here in Okazaki, Japan. We are asking God to take our lives and our mustard seeds of faith and work powerfully. To learn more visit our website (msgf.com)

Update from Brigette

Dear Friends

The month of August was filled with several out-of-the-ordinary outreach events, goodbyes as half our team moves to Osaka, and adjusting as we enter a changing phase of ministry at the church. It is exciting to think that MSCC has been in existence for over a year and a half, and our team is working to be active and aware of the best possible ways to continue helping people get to church and learn about Jesus.

Women's Minstry in Japan

Baby shower with many of the women from MSCC!I love that in so many places in the world, women can bond over love for decadent snacks and brand new babies. This month, the ladies of MSCC threw a baby shower for my pregnant teammate, Stephanie. Crammed into my apartment were 21 people, sitting wherever we could find space! After eating lots of food and playing some funny shower games, we shifted gears a little bit prior to opening Stephanie’s presents. My teammate, Caitlin explained to the women that as Christians, we believe God knows us each intimately and loves us very much because he made us. She read Psalm 139 in English, and then Sumi, who was baptized last year, read it in Japanese.  As they read, the women were very quiet and seemed enthralled at what they were hearing. Afterward, everyone gathered around Stephanie and the other two pregnant women at the party, and my teammate Megan prayed out loud over them. Though we didn’t plan it as an official “ministry activity,” the evening turned out to be a wonderful opportunity to point our friends toward God. It was such an encouragement to us, and a reminder that God is always working, even in ordinary circumstances.

Also this month was MSCC’s first ever official women’s ministry event. Officially titled “Ladies’ Day Out,” we sent invitations to all the Japanese Christianwomen in the church. We also invited Yumi, a Japanese pastor’s wife from another church in Nagoya to come and encourage the women in their faith. After eating brunch together in the home of my teammate, Erin one Saturday morning, we listened to Yumi speak about her own dramatic testimony of faith. She also taught from James 1, encouraging the women to put into obedient practice what they learn at church, and finally, to use our gifts to reach Japan together for Jesus. The women who attended, including my teammates and I, left excited about our faith, and encouraged to share it zealously with those we know.

Invite, Invite, Invite!

After being around for one and a half years, MSCC is entering into a new phase of existence.  Church is less of a novel concept, and more of a foundation on which we are building and maintaining. So, the team is wracking our brains to come up with creative ways to connect people with the church. Though every individual has a different story of how they ended up coming to MSCC, every single person’s journey to church begins with an invitation to church, and so we are trying to be very proactive in inviting (and re-inviting) many people.

In August, we planned several “Street Lives,” which are always prime opportunities to invite people to be a part of our Christian community. Rather than simply handing out invitations to strangers, we are experimenting with different methods, such as going to dinner with our newfound friends after the events, inviting them to our band’s next Street Live,  or to another activity our church is doing, whether official and informal. Part of the beauty of doing a pioneering work like church-planting is that there is not textbook containing a formula for success in breaking into the culture here, so we get to experiment with many methods. Even so, I can’t help but be reminded of Jesus’ parable of the sower. It is inevitable that people will respond in all different ways to hearing the gospel, and even to the idea of being invited to a religious gathering. But the more people who have an opportunity to hear it, the more will respond with faith in Christ. And so we keep on sowing seeds of the gospel in every opportunity we have. Thank you so much for your partnership with Mustard Seed that makes it possible for us to have a church to which we can invite our friends and neighbors to in Japan! My teammates and I truly could not be doing the work of church planting in Japan if it was not for your financial sacrifice and supportive prayers.

With much love and thanks,

Brigette

Exciting News

Exciting News from Japan!

Six months ago we launched Mustard Seed Christian Church not knowing who would show up – if anybody. Since that time we have had new people come to church almost every week and have already celebrated 3 baptisms. And as you probably read in last month’s update, we have now run out of space in our current location. Up till now, we have been meeting in a sports bar that can seat 36 people, but this past week we had 48 people there! It’s a wonderful problem to have! So we asked you to pray that God would provide a new place.

He has answered your prayers! We have secured a new place to meet at starting from August 1st. The location is a dance studio that is conveniently located very close to our current location. You can see the website for the new location here. The new place will allow us to seat around 100 people. We are very excited about this move and what it will mean for the potential growth of God’s church in Japan. As excited as we are about the growth and new location, we now have new financial needs that need to be met quickly, and we’re asking for your help.

OUR CURRENT FACILITY

 OUR NEW FACILITY

How You Can Help

Specifically, renting this new location is going to cost us about $650 dollars more per month than what we were previously paying. Moreover, our previous location already had the following items that we now need to buy:

  • Projector and projector stand
  • Projector screen
  • Sound board
  • Power amp and monitors
  • Chairs and tables

Recently, we taught on the importance of giving at Mustard Seed Christian Church. It was amazing to see people respond to the message and begin to give regularly to the church. We want you to know that the church is going to be giving sacrificially to these expenses as well. We don't yet have the funds to cover the expenses of this move, but are completely maxed out of space. We are asking if you would consider partnering with the church to make sure there is room for more people to come hear the gospel and join God's family.

In total we have around $8,000 in new one time needs as well as the increased monthly costs to rent the new location. Would you please make a special contribution or consider raising your regular giving to help meet these needs. Giving online is very easy to do by clicking HERE.

Thank you so much for your prayer, support and encouragement. I wish you could tangibly see the way that your sacrifices really do go to making a kingdom impact in Japan. Your gifts help make it possible for this mustard seed to grow. Thank you!

 Greetings Friends and Supporters!

The past two months have been great months of productive ministry for Mustard Seed Global Fellowship. I am excited to fill you in on how things are going with our recent church plant in Nagoya as well as some future projects we are working towards.

Mustard Seed Christian Church in Nagoya

Our church plant in Nagoya continues to thrive with two recent baptisms as well as a young man, training for pastoral ministry. This young man, Taisei, became a Christian in Australia, but was recently baptized at the church and wants to become a minister of the gospel in the future. He has a long road ahead, but we are excited to be training up someone to help minister with us in Japan. The church is currently going through the book of Ephesians and there are a handful of people very close to making decisions to follow Jesus. God is at work! Keep praying.

New Church Planter & Team Heading to Osaka

We recently hired a new church planter to be a member of a new team we are building to plant a church in Osaka, Japan. Ryan Fletcher, is a graduate of Ozark Christian College who recently finished a preaching internship at College Heights Christian Church in Joplin, MO. Ryan said he joined Mustard Seed because, “The whole world needs an opportunity to hear about Jesus and the whole world needs Christ-centered churches. Planting a church in an unreached city it is a faithful thing to do with my life and I am glad to serve in this way.” We are excited to have Ryan on board and are in the process of adding to this new team. This summer, I am an taking Ryan through an extensive pre-field training program to help prepare him for effective ministry in Japan.

Prayer Requests

Please continue to pray for the following 10 cities:

  1. Osaka, Japan
  2. Tokyo, Japan
  3. Karachi, Pakistan,
  4. Dhaka, Bangladesh
  5. Mumbai, India
  6. Delhi, India
  7. Calcutta, India
  8. Tehran, Iran
  9. Bangkok, Thailand
  10. Istanbul, Turkey

These are the 10 largest, least-reached cities in the entire world and the places that MSGF wants to plant churches in the future. We are still seeking God’s direction for the best strategy to accomplish this goal and ask that you would join us in seeking his wisdom and asking him to raise up workers to plant new churches in these cities.
