Change Series, 11/08/2009, "Your 2 Cents Worth"
 Mark 12:41-44
41Jesus sat down oppositethe place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd puttingtheir money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in largeamounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,[a]worth only a fraction of a penny.[b] 43Callinghis disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poorwidow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

Periodically we fall into the trap that says,"Well, I can't give much so I won't give at all." Or we won't givebecause we don't really trust that God will take care of our needs.
But here in this passage from Mark 12, Jesus simply observes a poorwidow who puts a paltry two cents in the "offering plate" at thetemple. It won't pay the light bill or take care of the insurance orpay the salaries of the priests. But Jesus isn't focused on the amount;he is focused on the motive, the heart. He doesn't even appear to havea conversation with her - he addresses his disciples and tells themthat she has given more the anyone else that day.
More? Two cents was more?
In the way God's economy works, yes. In fact, it was surpassingly more than what any of the wealthy gave that day.
Change. It all belongs to God - even the change. What keeps us from giving?

Real Stories

Practical Ideas – Give. You'll never learn faithfulness without giving.
Save. It's in effect paying yourself.
Pay cash. Inconvenient perhaps, but it will keep you focused.
